Recommended Food for Bernedoodles & Aussie Bernedoodles
Your Blue Skye Doodle Puppy Will Be Eating This When They Go Home
Farmina Puppy
Your puppy will go home eating Farmina N&D Pumpkin Lamb & Blueberry Puppy kibble (mini size). This is a grain free food. See the link below to order from Amazon or you can order it direct from Farmina.com. Check out Dog Food Advisor for reviews on Farmina dog food.
During weaning and the transition to kibble, our puppies will have goats milk, Farmina and/or Identity canned formula, Steve’s patties, Kefir and a rotation of lightly cooked and prepared proteins.
Research has shown that dams fed a variety of proteins during pregnancy and lactation help boost the puppies gut biome, which helps to minimize future food allergies. We do transition them to only the Farmina Puppy kibble before they go home to make it easy on their new families.
Our 2026 Summary of Recommended Brands
These brands are our choice for the healthiest ingredients, sourcing and transparency with minimal to no added synthetic vitamins and minerals (to replace natural vitamins and nutrients killed during the high heat extrusion process), no seed oils or high GMO inflammatory ingredients. While we don’t recommend a 100% dry kibble diet, there are a handful of brands that are better than others. Carna4 is lightly baked at low temperature to preserve nutrition. Farmina is non-GMO and has a higher meat content than most brands.

Rotating Proteins (Rotational Feeding)
What is Rotational Feeding?
Rotational feeding refers to regularly rotating the diet your dog consumes. This can be as simple as changing to a new protein when you are running out of. your pet’s current bag. If you are feeding a lamb formula for instance, purchase the chicken formula for the next bag and beef, duck, venison etc. for the next one.
Sensitive pets will benefit from an easy transition, including some of the prior protein and mixing it into the new bag for a few days or a week. Most pets will be ok with a more drastic switch and you can even rotate proteins more often.
Adding different toppers to their meal is another way to add nutritional variety.
Protein Exposure
Food allergies exist in dogs but are not all that common. Often food sensitivities are confused with or misdiagnosed as food allergies. True food allergies cause an immune mediated response, whereas food sensitivities are much more common and typically manifest as poor food tolerance causing a reaction such as soft stools, excess gas, itchy dry skin, itchy paws and/or ears. Just like in humans, exposure to different proteins at a young age may decrease the chances of developing food sensitivities.
A rotation diet exposing your puppy to a broader range of proteins helps prevent sensitivities in your dog.
Benefits
Rotation rounds out the nutrients your pet consumes. It best mimics the variety the domestic canine would naturally consume. From animal proteins to fruits and vegetables. Different animal proteins have various amino acid and fatty acid profiles in addition to a variety of minerals and vitamins essential to your dogs health. For example, beef contains greater amounts of iron but is lower in Omega-3 fatty acids vs. Pork. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and differ across different animal protein sources as well. Turkey meat contains higher amounts of the amino acid tryptophan. The dietary variation our dogs wild cousins would have enjoyed, is lost eating the same dry extruded kibble every day of their life.
Rotational feeding provides our pets with diversity in their nourishment!
Flavor Fatigue
Flavor Fatigue is a fancy way of saying pets get bored eating the same food at every meal, every day. Just like we would. Rotational feeding keeps them interested in the food and prevents this. The novelty of new foods is especially helpful for picky eaters or animals with a reduced appetite.
What We Feed Our Own Dogs & Puppies
Our Sires and Dams are fed a variety of foods, including Farmina N&D Prime formulas, Carna4, Steve’s Real Food (prepared and complete raw patties), and/or Identity canned formulas. Adults get fresh chicken eggs (raised here on our ranch), fresh blueberries, apples, carrots and a small amount of other seasonal veggies on different days. We add a daily probiotic and an Omega 3 oil (salmon, mackerel, krill, olive etc.).
The most important nutrients canines need are protein and fat. Dogs can digest carbohydrates in small amounts, but they don’t actually have a nutritional requirement for carbohydrates. Manufacturers of dry kibble include them because starch is needed for the extrusion process and they are an inexpensive ingredient. Carbs do provide energy and may be helpful for very active dogs. However, too many carbohydrates in our pet’s food can raise insulin and cause obesity. But be careful about your grain-free choices as some manufacturers replace low cost grains with low cost legumes which increase the protein percentage on the package but which are obviously not as healthy for your dog as meat or fish based proteins and not as easily digested. Unlike quality proteins, legumes don’t naturally contain taurine which is an essential nutrient and may prevent DCM.
Dogs just aren’t designed to eat dry, processed foods their entire lives. Dry foods are ultra-processed, requiring the addition of vitamins, minerals and amino acids to replace nutrition lost in the high heat process. The two main nutrients required by dogs are protein and fat. Yes, dogs can eat some carbs, but in large quantities it can contribute to health issues. Unfortunately, the percentage of carbohydrates in a typical dry dog food is 46-64%. Yikes! Read the label on most dry dog food brands, including the ones sold by the top pet food manufacturers s and specialized veterinarian formulas. Take a look at the inclusion of corn, wheat, barley, rice, potatoes, inexpensive protein meal and legumes (in all their repetitive forms). Although not currently required on labels, starting next year dog food product labels will start showing the Carbohydrate percentage and it will be easier for all pet parents to choose the best option.
Feed kibble with the lowest carb count and the least legumes that your budget allows. I highly recommend Carna4 which is made with real meat and organic sprouted seeds. Sprouting, germinates the seed, breaking down the starches and supporting natural nutrient absorption. You can also consider freeze-dried, air-dried, canned, gently cooked or pre-made frozen raw. If you can start including just 10% more fresh foods, you significantly reduce the carbohydrates your canine is eating, and drastically improve their health. Personally, we feed our fresh and raw ingredients at breakfast and their evening meal is one of the dry formulas. This is also what our reproductive vet does for their own pets.
And don’t be afraid of the term “raw” in pet food. Companies like Steve’s Raw eliminate the inconvenience and sell pre-made patties that are complete and balanced. Just thaw overnight and serve. They look like a square raw burger patty, no odor, no mess, no fuss.
